Multimedia Database Research Lab

The Multimedia Database Research Lab was established in 2006 at the Department of Computer Engineering of Middle East Technical University. The laboratory aims to enable new research facilities in the multimedia database field. The aim of the laboratory is to conduct research on various topics related to multimedia databases, especially video databases. In the lab there are a number of main active research tracks: multimedia database modeling, semantic content extraction, indexing, and querying.

The laboratory has several multimedia-related hardware and software facilities. The hardware and software infrastructure is continually kept up-to-date.

In the administration of Prof. Dr. Adnan Yazıcı; 2 teaching members, 7 PhD and 5 MSc students, a total number of 15 researches are currently using the lab.

Current Projects

A current research project of the laboratory is "Multimodal Semantic Content Extraction, Storage and Querying for Video" which is supported by TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey.) The scope of the project is to develop an intelligent database management system having capabilities of extracting semantic data automatically by means of video’s visual, audio and textual (multi-modal) data, storing in appropriate formats and queryin in an efficient way.

Past Projects

The previous research project of the laboratory is "Modeling and Development of an Intelligent and Fuzzy Object-Oriented Database for Multimedia Database Applications" which is also supported by TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey.) The scope of the project is to develop an intelligent database management system for modeling multimedia database applications, a fuzzy inference engine that can make inferences on multimedia information, an index structure for efficiently accessing multimedia data, a language for describing and querying multimedia data and finally developing a framework that integrates all of the components.
